YAWNS NB: The Truth About Sleeping Pills and Safer Ways to Get a Good Night’s Sleep
September 15 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Getting a good night’s sleep can get harder as we get older. Sleeping pill use is highest in people over 65 with New Brunswick having the highest rate in Canada. Medical experts recommend against the use of sleeping pills by older adults because of safety concerns, for example memory problems and falls. During this 1-hour presentation, Dr. David Gardner will talk about how sleep changes with age and the benefits and risks of taking sleeping pills. He will also describe the YAWNS NB study, which shares information about effective ways to get a good night’s sleep without sleeping pills. The session will end with a Question & Answer period.
Dr. David Gardner is a Professor with the Department of Psychiatry of Dalhousie University and is the lead researcher of the YAWNS NB project. He has been researching the safe and effective use of medicines for over 20 years and has over 100 scholarly publications. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence and community service.
