Officials announced more than $20 million for a new 56-unit housing development in Saint John’s Waterloo Village. The project, located on Cliff Street and known as the Steepleview Development, is a collaborative effort involving federal, provincial, and municipal governments, along with local organizations.
Half of the units will be designated as affordable housing for seniors, women and children, and Indigenous residents. The development will also include a 120-space daycare centre, wellness gardens, and a community room, designed to provide both housing and community support for residents.
Funding comes from multiple sources: the federal government’s Affordable Housing Fund is contributing over $18.1 million, while the province is providing nearly $3.4 million, including more than $2.2 million in rent supplements. The City of Saint John is contributing $260,000, with $840,000 in land equity from the Diocese of Saint John and $250,000 from the Knights of Columbus – Council 937.
Kevin McDonald, president of Steepleview Developments Inc., noted that the project has faced additional challenges this year, including security issues such as theft and vandalism on the construction site, which have necessitated hiring overnight security at an extra cost of $150,000 to $200,000.
Construction is expected to be completed by next fall, with officials highlighting the project’s importance in addressing housing needs and providing safe, affordable options for vulnerable populations in Saint John.
